Gaug, Gabor Joseph Gabor, known to his friends as "Gabe" or "Joe", passed away peacefully on Sept 23, 2019 at the age of 72, following an 8-year battle with Alzheimer's. Gabe was born in Nuremberg, Germany on December 17, 1946, to Joseph and Maria Gaug, and then immigrated to the United States with his family through Ellis Island at the age of five. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Ann, and his sister, Sylvia Carey, along with his two sons Jaime (Heather) and Ryan (Amy), and grandchildren Avery, Annabel, Lydia and Laszlo. Gabe grew up in Pontiac, IL where he attended high school and was a star on the football team, and later earned a B.A. in history from Wartburg College. Gabe was exceptionally proud of his Hungarian heritage and had a passion for travel, aviation, biking and history. His 42 year career with Air Wisconsin and United Airlines enabled him to visit family in Hungary multiple times throughout his life, and achieve one of his life goals which was to visit all seven continents, including locations as remote as Easter Island and Antarctica. He was also an avid solar eclipse chaser, and was able to witness eight total solar eclipses around the world. Gabe's family would like to thank the many support groups he and Mary Ann were a part of for their care and encouragement during Gabe's journey through Alzheimer's. A special thank you to Jenny Morgan and the staff at Breck Homes for the loving care they provided for Gabe. Memorials are preferred to the Breck Homes of Bloomington or the Alzheimer's Association. Visitation will be at Dawn Valley Washburn- McReavy at 10AM Friday, October 4 followed by a memorial service at 11AM with a light lunch after.
